Evaluation of my experience at UTX, Inc, 3252 Keswick Rd, Baltimore, MD
Summary: UTX Technician is possibly competent, but fails to communicate clearly and the shop has no paper or email trail that clarifies these issues.
I was initially delighted to find a store that repairs old printers. I brought my HP 1020 into the shop and dropped it off.
First Problem: explanation of cost not clear. Here is the correct information $59.00 for Diagnostic and $89.00 for labor; the Diagnostic fee is applied to the labor charge, if you decide to have the job done at UTX.
At the shop, when you drop off the printer, you sign a piece of paper to give consent to do the work. I am told that the information about pricing is on that paper that is turned back into the shop. I was given absolutely no paperwork to take with me, nor any written explanation of the charges. Later I found their web site and no prices for services were given on the web page.
The work that was done was to use a lubricant to clean the rollers so the paper would pick up. When I picked up printer, there was a test page printed to show that the printer was printing.
I had to wait 2 weeks until my computer man could come over and help me with the printer. Yes, the printer did pick up paper, but the rollers (the same ones that were cleaned with lubricant), squeaked.
When I called to ask if the squeak could be fixed? - NO.
Would the squeak impair the printer? Unknown. "I do not know what is causing the squeak and I do not recommend lubricating the printer. Because of the age of printer, it could be anything - it did not squeak when it was in the shop. This is WHY we do not give a guarantee."
If I could get the squeak fixed, would there be an extra charge? Yes. The first charge was to clean the rollers only and solve the paper-pick-up problem.
None of the above was explained to me when I dropped off the printer.
So now I have a back-up printer that picks up paper and squeaks. A squeaking sound is usually not a good sign. So I paid $89.00 and still have a problem.
**UPDATE: I went online to find out what is involved in “cleaning the rollers” (this is what the Tech told me that he did on the printer). Numerous PROFESSIONAL web sites recommending to ***FIRST clean the rollers*** with water and a clean cloth. The second step - lubricating the rollers - I did not do, because it is tricky. First off, solvents can destroy rubber and all lubricants are solvents of some sort or another. Secondly there are hundreds of products listed on Amazon for “clean a printer roller” and I did not know which one to choose. Thirdly, the instructions for how to actually lubricate the rollers were not clear to me - even after reading several articles.
For cleaning the HP 1020, I used a Qtip or a soft cloth with water. For the small spaces I used a Qtip and for the larger flat surfaces I used a soft cloth. *** Apparently, the Teck at UTX Inc on Keswick Ave does not believe that cleaning is important. *** I removed years of dust and grime, including a couple of “dust bunnies” from the inside of the printer. The Qtip was especially helpful because it could get inside the printer without taking it apart.
When I tried to print again - the printer made a noise, but the noise changed from the first time.
I think this printer will due for a back-up printer and I am very disappointed in UTX Inc.
